Modified nonlinear Schroedinger equation for Alfven waves propagating along the magnetic field in cold plasmas
Abstract
The basic nonlinear equation which describes the Alfven waves, with small but finite amplitude propagating along the magnetic field in cold plasmas was derived modifying a reductive perturbation method. Then as a result, the nonlinear dispersion relation was obtained through a procedure which clarifies the physical meaning. Furthermore, a modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation is proposed which describes the modulated Alfven wave more correctly than previous works. The analysis agrees well with the numerical calculation of the initial value problem using the basic equations.
