Damping of the gravity waves in the atmosphere under the effect of the planetary boundary layer
Abstract
On the basis of solving the linearized equations of a barotropic atmosphere, the frequency of the gravity waves propagated through a sphere is determined. The comparison of the solution to the equations considering and not considering the presence of the planetary boundary layer in the atmosphere permits analysis of the dependence of the frequency on the turbulent viscosity, in particular, estimation of how this factor affects the wave damping and the decrease in their phase velocity.
