The swirling flow between rotating coaxial cylinders with convection
Abstract
The behavior of a fluid with an arbitrary initial tangential velocity profile between two rotating cylinders with axial convection is analysed. The solution is equivalent to the sum of two simpler annular fluid solutions. One has cylinder rotation without axial convection and the other has axial convection with stationary cylinders. The complete solution indicates the presence of a boundary layer adjacent to the inner cylinder. Though the solution assumes laminar viscosity, comparison with turbulent experiments is made with the aid of an effective viscosity. Good correlation is found for an effective viscosity which depends upon a characteristic rotational Reynolds' number.
