Winds and electric fields in the upper atmosphere
Abstract
The paper discusses the nature of winds and electric fields existing on a global scale at altitudes higher than 40 km. Topics considered are the mesospheric circulation, tidal oscillations of the atmosphere, and global wind systems in the thermosphere. Electric fields in the dynamo region (between 70 and 150 km) and those generated in the magnetosphere are examined. It is also shown that winds and electric fields will produce drifts in the ionospheric F region.
