The history of the Pi theorem
Abstract
The Pi theorem provides the basis for the method of dimensional analysis and for the investigations of similarity and model theory. It is pointed out that a mathematical proof of the theorem was first reported by Federmann (1911). Federmann's theorem was obtained in connection with an example presented in a mathematical investigation concerning the integration of partial differential equations. Contributions related to the Pi theorem made by other authors are also discussed along with questions regarding a generalization of the Pi theorem.
