Active experiments in the ionosphere and magnetosphere
Abstract
Active (controlled) experiments in the ionosphere and magnetosphere include the injection of waves and electrons from rockets to stimulate electromagnetic emission, the injection of plasmas to stimulate substorms, and wave injection to stimulate particle precipitation. This paper summarizes recent work on such active experiments with particular emphasis on the Zarnitsa-1 rocket experiment. The aim of this experiment was to inject energetic electrons into the ionosphere to stimulate an artificial aurora. The ARAKS (Artificial Radiation and Aurora at Kerguelen and Soviet Union) experiment is described with special emphasis on the configurations and instrumentation of the French rocket Eridan.
