Azimuthal disturbances in a homogeneous gravitating medium
Abstract
Properties of purely azimuthal waves in a homogeneous gravitating medium are analyzed. It is noted that this problem is relevant to the stability of self-gravitating systems, especially in connection with the spiral structure of galaxies. Using the dispersion equations for a 'cold' cylinder, it is shown that only disturbances with an azimuthal mode number of 2 can propagate in a homogeneous gravitating medium.
