Drag formulae of a sphere moving in a viscous fluid - valid in the range of Reynolds number 0-6
Abstract
The problem of the drag of a sphere moving in a viscous fluid has been studied since 1851. However, the theoretical analysis is in fair agreement with the experimental data only in the range of Reynolds number not exceeding .5. In this paper new formulae for the drag of a sphere moving in a viscous fluid in the range of Reynolds number 0-6 based on sphere radius are presented. The results obtained are in fair agreement with the recent experimental data. It may also be expanded for small Re and thus reduced to formulae in agreement with those already established by previous investigators.
