Transponder characteristics of a broadcasting satellite. Complementary study for FM-FM modulation conversion onboard a satellite
Abstract
Possibilities of improving the FM uplink spectrum utilization of broadcasting satellites were investigated for a transparent transponder. The following methods were envisaged: FM-FM conversion onboard the satellite and frequency reutilization. It was found that a transponder with FM-FM modulation conversion can effectively contribute to improved uplink spectrum utilization. A bandwidth reduction of 17 MHz on the uplink can be obtained, as compared to 27 MHz downlink bandwidth. Frequency reutilization can in principle lead to a better spectrum utilization.
