A variable-emphasis limiter to improve the technical quality of HF broadcasting
Abstract
The adaptation of a variable-emphasis limiter arrangement, devised originally for UHF and VHF/FM sound broadcasting, was investigated as a sound-signal processing system for HF broadcasting. Subjective tests were carried out to compare the speech intelligibility obtained in adverse conditions using an experimental variable-emphasis system with that obtained using the normal BBC processing technique. The results indicate a definite preference for the experimental system.
