Spread spectrum range and range rate equipment
Abstract
Spread Spectrum Random Access (SSRA) Communication System developed by Radio Research Laboratories has a range measuring function and also provides a stable Doppler-shifted signal. Range rate can be obtained from the Doppler-shifted signal. Utilizing these functions, we have developed spread spectrum range and range rate (SSRR) equipment that operates in conjunction with SSRA to perform measurement and record of range and range rate for a satellite. The recording function of the associated data, i.e., the level of the received beacon signal, polarization angle and antenna directions are also provided. Since March 1973, SSRR equipment has been regularly used for measuring and recording range and range rate for the ATS-1 satellite. It has been confirmed by study and experiment that instrumental errors in root mean square for range and range rate are 60 cm and 1 to 10 cm per second, respectively.
