The energy characteristics of irregular lightguides - Trajectory method
Abstract
The trajectory dependence of the phase and energy characteristics of the field in a phase corrector of a two-dimensional light guide is determined. Simple analytic expressions are obtained for the field in an extended light guide and are used to calculate light guides with systematic as well as random irregularities. The maximum allowable RMS values of the nonuniformities in a transmission line are estimated, and the optimum value is determined in terms of transmission stability. A numerical example is presented which shows that a filtered transmission line giving nonuniformity tolerances that are an order of magnitude less restrictive than in an unfiltered line can be constructed using modern CO2 lasers and heterodyne receivers operating in the 10.6-micron region.
