A radio-acoustic method of measuring the vertical thermal profile of the lower troposphere
Abstract
The Doppler-radar measurement of the local velocity of a train of acoustic waves propagating upward in air may be used for evaluating the vertical profile of temperature along the ray path. Radar echo is induced by acoustic pressure perturbing the electromagnetic index of refraction of air. A project for the exploitation of the method for sounding the first kilometer of the troposphere at Trino Vercellese is described.
