A method for detecting gravitational waves with the aid of torsion pendulums
Abstract
The paper considers two identical torsion pendulums whose beams form a right angle. It is shown that the rotational moments caused by some gravitational wave will be equal in magnitude, but opposite in direction. It is concluded that this peculiar effect may be exploited to distinguish the response of a detector to gravitational radiation against a background of oscillations due to seismic events or other causes.
