Some unusual elementary aspects of irreversibility
Abstract
The present article briefly sketches the Boltzmann formulation of the H theorem and the objections to this formulation contributed by Zermelo and Loschmidt. In addition, it discusses some consequences of one of the assumptions of the earlier formulation (i.e., that the spherical impact parameter, SIP, is random) in order to throw some light on the mathematical physics of the phenomenon of irreversibility. The problem of the collision of two monatomic molecules forms the basis for the discussion.
