Pair creation in expanding universes
Abstract
A new theory of particle production in background gravitational fields is presented as an alternative to Hamiltonian diagonalization. We calculate a vacuum-vacuum transition amplitude and identify the expected pair creation rate in terms of the amount by which the modulus of this amplitude differs from unity. The method is applied to some Robertson-Walker cosmological models and is shown to give results differing from those obtained by Hamiltonian diagonalization.
