Quantum mechanical theory of organic dye laser
Abstract
This dissertation contains a fully quantum mechanical theory for the organic dye laser. Using the Born-Markoff master equation, the density matrix equations of motion for the organic dye laser is obtained. These equations are used for the radiation distribution in the steady state. The investigation of the result shows that the organic dye laser radiation distribution has features qualitatively different from that of other lasers. The organic dye laser has four levels which interact directly with the laser radiation. There are two singlet state levels which are predominantly emissive and two triplet levels which are predominantly absorptive. In addition, the triplet state population is directly related to the singlet state population. It is the presence of these triplet states which make the dye laser different from other lasers.
