Degradation due to quantization effects in digital low-pass filters
Abstract
The basic idea of the degradation factor and its usefulness to the designer was developed. Techniques for deriving discrete transfer functions from given continuous transfer functions are discussed and criteria for simplifying the definition of the degradation factor are presented. Noise models are introduced in order to demonstrate techniques to simplify the evaluation of the degradation factor for parallel and cascade digital filter realizations using first and second order sections. The noise models are also used to analyze the quantization effects of the analog-to-digital conversion and arithmetic round-off. A computer program for the evaluation of the degradation factor and frequency response of specific digital filters is presented. Steps for the use of the degradation factor in practical applications are presented and one practical design example is discussed.
