The motion of bubbles between parallel planar walls
Abstract
An investigation is conducted concerning the motion of gas bubbles in a narrow channel between two solid walls. The bubbles are simultaneously in contact with both walls. The contours of the static menisci formed between parallel planar plates are determined. Computations are carried out regarding the velocity of bubbles in the channel for an oblique orientation of the plates. The effect of the bubble boundary on the velocity of bubble migration is estimated. Data obtained in an experimental study are found to confirm, in general, the theoretical results. There is, however, a discrepancy related to the estimation of meniscus effects. The reasons for this discrepancy are studied with the aid of a device for the direct observation of moving menisci.
