Spin-down of pulsars.
Abstract
The possible role played by surrounding interstellar material in the spin-down of magnetic nondegenerate stars is theoretically investigated. An analogy is drawn between the oblique rotator model for pulsars and the magnetic frictional braking model for nondegenerate stars. It is concluded that after a pulsar has slowed down to a period on the order of a few seconds (due to stellar wind), the interstellar material has the principal influence on further braking.
