Spectrum of the Delta Scuti variable 20 Canum Venaticorum: a model-atmosphere analysis.
Abstract
High dispersion spectra of 20 CVn are analyzed using model atmospheres. The reciprocal effective temperature, surface gravity, and depth-independent microturbulent velocity are derived by fitting computed continua, hydrogen-line opacities, ionization equilibria, and other factors to the observed quantities, and the abundances of 26 elements are determined in relation to the solar abundances. C, N, and O are found to be normal, while the other elements are found to be overabundant by factors ranging from 2 to 16. The abundances of the elements relative to Fe are compared for delta Scuti and Am stars, and the general abundance pattern of the delta Scuti stars suggests that Am anomalies are less pronounced in these stars than in Am stars. This result is explained by the diffusion hypothesis.
