New light on fiber optics communication
Abstract
The paper examines the design and operation of optical free-space and fiber communication links for both digital and analog data. Optical transmitters (IR-LEDs and injection lasers), receivers (PIN or avalanche photodiodes with transimpedance amplifiers) and waveguides are analyzed. Signal levels achievable at the output are given as a function of transmitter and receiver characteristics, coupling efficiencies of the emitted and received radiation to the transmission medium and the characteristics of the transmission medium itself.
