Holographic optical elements
Abstract
The characteristics, current technology, and applications of holographic optical elements (HOEs) viewed as components of a general optical system are reviewed. The wavefront reconstruction property of the hologram is considered as providing a wavefront-transforming element, i.e., a lens, rather than an image-storing device. The discussion is limited to optical holograms. Particular attention is devoted to HOE imaging properties and aberrations. Other topics discussed include design concepts, raytracing of HOEs, recording materials, and HOEs in visual displays. The basic raytracing equations are given, and the special requirements for hologram recording apparatus and materials are discussed.
