The X and gamma diffuse background.
Abstract
Experimental results and theoretical interpretations are presented for the diffuse X and gamma background from 0.1 keV to 100 MeV. A historical survey of X-ray astronomy is presented, emphasizing Uhuru observations. The experimental situation is discussed, with discussion of the soft, medium and hard X-ray range, with comments on balloon experiments, with treatment of the high energy range. Theoretical aspects are presented, with emphasis on the interpretation of the diffuse background, on discrete sources vs diffuse production, and on microscopic emission mechanisms.
