Calculation of the influence of various factors on the equilibrium distribution of ozone in the earth's atmosphere
Abstract
Using a numerical solution of the general stationary equation for the meridional distribution of ozone, quantitative estimates are given for the influence of macroturbulence, the distribution of water vapor, photochemical processes, and boundary conditions on the ozone profiles for various latitudes. It is found that global advection processes and large-scale atmospheric motions determine the general features of ozone distribution, and that boundary conditions do not strongly affect the ozone profile for a given latitude. Photochemical processes and macroturbulent action are regarded as secondary contributors to the ozone profile and distribution, but may be very significant in equatorial and polar latitudes.
