Theory of the shape of the earth
Abstract
This book gives an account of the general theory for determining the shape of the earth from astronomical, geodetic, and gravimetric measurements as well as from satellite observations. Necessary information from potential theory is included, and techniques for solving boundaryvalue problems are examined. Properties of the earth's gravitational field are described together with the parameters characterizing the planet. Practical problems of geodesy requiring local gravimetric surveys are discussed in detail. Consideration is also given to the fundamental principles of interpreting gravity anomalies for purposes of prospecting for useful minerals.
