On the mechanism of M +O 3- and M +NO 2- formation by photolysis of matrix samples at 15 K
Abstract
The species M +O 3- and M +NO 2- have been produced in matrix samples of alkali atoms, N 2O and O 2 or NO by mercury arc photolysis. In similar studies, Milligan and Jacox proposed a mechanism involving the diffusion and reaction of the O - anion. We believe that the observations are better explained by photolysis of N 2O in the presence of M +O 2- with oxygen atom transfer to give M +O 3- and the analogous reaction with M +NO - to give M +NO 2-.
