Optimization of end fire arrays
Abstract
The problem of optimization of the directivity of a linear end-fire array with respect to both antenna-currents and progressive-phase-shift is discussed. Using the procedure described in this paper, linear end-fire arrays may be designed to have substantially higher directivities than those obtained hitherto. The enhancement in the directivity is more pronounced as the number of elements increases and also as the element-spacing decreases. A salient feature of this design is that the increase in the directivity is accompanied by a decrease in both the beam-width and the sidelobe level. Numerical examples illustrating this technique are also given.
