An iterative array for multiplication and division
Abstract
An improved technique is proposed for the multiplication and division of two binary numbers on the basis of the universal arithmetic cell of Majithia and Kitai (1971). The proposed technique uses only two types of cells while the one used by Deegan (1971) necessitates additional logic gates. The advantages of this iterative array are that it utilizes a right-shift method of multiplication and a restoring method of division instead of the nonrestoring method used by Majithia and Kitai, that the cells employed are fewer in number due to the use of a special control cell, that it is possible to get the true remainder of a division, and that both multiplication and division are obtained at the same output terminals.
