Note on the electric splitting of drift shells
Abstract
The deviation of a particle from its dipole magnetic drift shell in the presence of an electric field is reexamined. Previously published solutions are generalized to include the contribution of the corotation electric field and are extended to the case of strong drift shell splitting. Some limiting values of orbital asymmetry are obtained from an approximate form of the high-energy Alfvén layer.
