Fiber optic communications - A survey
Abstract
A range of examples of fiber optic waveguides and light sources is discussed to illustrate the basic calculations likely to be used in a wide variety of practical communication links. Key technologies and system concepts are reviewed; multimode, grade-index, and single-mode cables and their transmission characteristics, attenuation associated with different fiber fabrication methods, and the integrated optic repeater are some of the topics covered. Advantages of fiber optics over traditional copper and microwave links are demonstrated.
