Generalized criterion for feasibility of D-T plasma fusion
Abstract
A general criterion for a D-T-fueled plasma is derived. Calculations based on specific assumptions that are not necessarily applicable to all systems yield nτ values around 1015 sec/cm3 at temperatures near 60 keV, as compared to 5×1013 sec/cm3 at 30 keV obtained by Lawson. Moreover, nτ is not density independent, improving as the density increases. Additional conditions for controlled fusion indicated are a minimum heating efficiency of 2% and a minimum confinement efficiency of 99%.
