Isolation and the decline of the large blue butterfly (Maculinea arion) in Great Britain
Abstract
In England Maculinea arion is on the verge of extinction and there have been many explanations for its decline. Evidence is put forward to show that at one time it was more widespread in England than is generally realised. It is argued that the fragmentation of this widespread distribution is, in itself, a prime cause of the butterfly's disappearance.
