On the design of digital Cauer filters with coefficients of limited wordlength
Abstract
Starting from the well known design procedures for digital filters, the paper presents a method for minimizing the coefficient wordlength. The maximum errors of the transfer function H(Omega), differing in passband and stopband, are investigated. They depend upon the margins left between tolerance scheme and H(Omega) before rounding; this dependence is dtermined. An iterative optimization procedure changes these margins and, thus, renders it possible to reduce the wordlength of the coefficients. Finally, an estimation of the expenditure shows that a proper increase of the filter degree, combined with a minimization of the wordlength, may reduce the total cost of the realization.
