Copernicus: The Position and Nature of Scutum X-1
Abstract
X-ray observations of Scutum X-1 by the Copernicus satellite have been combined with the published results of a rocket scan along the galactic plane to derive the position of the source. The most likely position is right ascension 18 h 35 m 11 s, declination -7 deg 48 min 00 sec (1950); possible optical counterparts are suggested. The cutoff in the spectrum is equivalent to a column density of between 10 to the 23rd and 10 to the 24th power atoms/sq cm. Upper limits to the time variability of the source are computed.
