The Implausible History of Triple Star Models for Cygnus X-1: Evidence for a Black Hole
Abstract
Models for Cygnus X-1 as a triple star system have been proposed as a way of avoiding the presence of a black hole. Consideration of the likely past history of these models indicates that the supernova explosion which preceded the formation of the neutron star would have caused the system to have become a runaway. Tidal evolution and mass exchange do not seem to offer much hope of avoiding the presence of a black hole.
