The detection of carbon monoxide emission in planetary nebulae.
Abstract
We report the first detection of a molecule from planetary nebulae. We have found carbon monoxide emission in the planetary nebulae NGC 7027, IC 418, and NGC 6543. Compared with the optical nebula, the carbon monoxide emission about NGC 7027 is extended. We interpret our observations of NGC 7027 as a shell of gas ejected from the preplanetary nucleus as it evolved into a planetary.
