Ionized intracluster gas.
Abstract
The present letter reports results of a search for a hot diffuse component of the virial 'missing mass' in the regions between galaxies in the rich clusters Abell 779, 1367, 1656 (Coma), and 2199. Stringent upper limits are determined for the H-beta emission from ionized intergalactic gas in these clusters, and the 2-sigma limit is shown to imply that the clusters are probably not dynamically bound by such gas at temperatures less than 2 million K. When combined with X-ray data, the limits are found to imply that the clusters are unlikely to be bound by ionized gas at any temperature for a Hubble constant of 55 km/sec per Mpc.
