Statistical Analysis of Velocities and Cyanogen Indices for G and K Giants
Abstract
Summary. Regressions of the velocity components U, V W and the total velocity S with the cyanogen index anomaly ACN have been computed for a sample of 631 G and K giants. Restrictions on the mean errors were imposed through this calculation. The resulting curves suggest the establishment of slow radial motions in extensive portions of the galactic gas, after a postcollapse stabilization period. Regressions of the anomaly ACN with U, V, W and S have also been calculated, without mean error restrictions. From the respective curves, two kinematical groups with the same metallic abundances have been confirmed. The presence of the abnormal group with high U and V velocity components and abnormally high abundances is explained here as an effect of the kinematics of the galactic gas.
