The Hydrodynamics of Accretion Discs I
Abstract
Summary. This is the first of two papers on the hydrodynamics of accretion discs. Here the disc is idealised to be a stationary axisymmetric toroidal flow of a compressible fluid. The stability against linearised short wavelength perturbations is discussed. When the Rayleigh and Schwarzschild criteria are satisfied the flow is stable against axisymmetric perturbations. However almost all nonaxisymmetric perturbations are not secularly stable, and examples of dynamically unstable modes are given. In the next paper these results are used to construct a model for the dissipative stresses in the disc. Key words: Accretion discs  stability
