The rf supplemented magnetic mirrors
Abstract
The reflection of single ions of approximately 5 eV energy in combined RF electric and static magnetic fields was observed. The RF E-field was predominantly transverse to the magnetic field, and the RF potential distribution on axis was determined experimentally. Computed values were found to agree with those measured on the axis, and thus the whole volume distribution of the RF potential was computed for the geometry in use. The experiments showed that transmission or nonadiabatic reflection occurred for all ions for certain ranges of parameters. Orbit calculations for many ions all agreed with observation except when the numerical method was known to be inaccurate. Adiabatic reflection was predicted to occur outside the range of the experimental parameters available.
