A survey of experiments and theory of parametric instabilities and plasma heating
Abstract
Results are summarized for a number of recent experiments on parametric instabilities and related plasma heating. Emphasis is placed on modes existing in magnetically confined plasmas, since these modes may be candidates for possible applications to heat fusion plasmas with high-power radio-frequency sources. Particular attention is given to the regime of Trivelpiece-Gould modes, lower-hybrid frequency, ion-cyclotron frequency (fast magnetosonic wave), and upper-hybrid frequency. An elementary treatment of the theoretical concepts is also presented.
