Temperature compensated pin gauge
Abstract
This temperature compensating measuring device was designed with the concept of accurately measuring large diameters (in the range of 11 to 12 feet) with less than .001 in. tolerance. Design and manufacture was prompted by the machining and inspecting techniques used for the 5 in./54 Gun Mount Radial Roller paths. The resultant effect of grinding the roller path, despite flood cooling, raised the path temperature 12 to 15F above the nominal ambient temperature. Conventional inspecting, by using a mechanical pin gauge, necessitated making allowances for the path's contraction. The Temperature Compensating Pin Gauge, electronic circuits (in conjunction with thermistors to detect the temperature of the gauge and ring), provide dimensional compensation such that the output reading represents the actual diameter of the part at 68F. The electronic device and pin gauge have proven successful in dimensional compensation for temperature variations between 54F and 114F.
