Translational waves in channels of brief length
Abstract
It is shown how simple wave theory, characterizing disturbances moving in an uniform flow field, can be applied even when the waves are subjected, for the brief length of the channel, to successive reflections in the extreme sections. On the basis of the Saint Venant equations and the theory of characteristics, a change of the dependent variables, which simplifies the mathematical model and allows a simple graphic construction, is suggested. Results are given for the experimental tests conducted to confirm the theoretical calculations.
