Compensated wide band voltage controlled oscillator for the Viking program /Mars soft-landing mission/
Abstract
Description of the development of quartz crystal resonators and circuitry for a voltage controlled crystal oscillator meeting stringent requirements of the Viking Mars-landing mission. The oscillator was designed to withstand heat sterilization at 140 C, high levels of vibration (75 G's), high levels of shock impact (1500 G's), and seven years of mission lifetime. Electrical requirements include a fundamental frequency of 393,216 (plus or minus 4) Hz at room ambient temperature, a frequency deviation of plus or minus 500 ppm for 2V modulation voltage, plus or minus 10% linearity, high sensitivity, and a wide range of temperature compensation. Summary test data for 20 units successfully delivered in the project are described.
