Future satellite experiments for gamma-burst observations.
Abstract
Certain objectives for future satellite experiments are identified and methods for achieving these objectives and the requirements they impose on instrument design and program co-ordination are described. Some of the experiments planned for launch during the next few years are discussed, and the extent to which they will satisfy the objectives is considered. It is concluded that the combination of Vela, IMP-7, COS-B, and SolRad Hi will maintain a capability for gamma ray burst observation for another three years. Major improvements concerning spectral distribution, time variations, and precise source location will be available from the 1978 to 1980 time period. Three satellites, Venus Orbiter, Heliocentric, and Mother, equipped with properly designed gamma-burst detectors, will locate the positions of intense sources with an accuracy of few arcs second.
