Improvement of convergence in orbit determination of artificial satellites
Abstract
The determination of satellite orbits is, in general, based on an iterative process of fitting a certain orbit model to a given set of observations. It is shown that the convergence of this process can be improved by (1) introducing new magnitudes which can easily be calculated from the commonly used observations, (2) reducing the number of the normal equations to be solved in the method of least squares. The improvement is demonstrated by two examples of determining the orbit of actual satellites.
