Plasma heating by magnetoacoustic oscillations
Abstract
Various mechanisms of energy dissipation in magnetoacoustic waves propagating in a high-temperature plasma across an applied magnetic field are studied. The conditions are identified under which the energy dissipation due to ion-ion collisions is much greater than the ohmic dissipation, and most of the oscillation energy is transferred to the ions. The possibility of plasma-ion heating by excitation of magnetoacoustic standing waves is examined.
