Water use and coal development in eastern Montana. Water availability and demands
Abstract
A one-year, two-phase study was undertaken to assess the availability and demand for water in the coal region of eastern Montana. The physical availability of surface and groundwater was treated, as were the legal problems associated with coal development, broken down by type of development. Data presented indicate that sufficient groundwater is available in eastern Montana to permit substantial amounts of coal development. Use of this water would not be without cost, however. Direct costs of impoundment and delivery, and foregone opportunities for using the water instream must be considered. The demand for water in coal development will depend in part on the cost of water to developers.
