Calorimetric apparatus for studying optical absorption in ultra low loss materials for optical fibres
Abstract
A method was developed to find the share of absorption in total attenuation and to measure the absorption coefficient as a function of wavelength. The method is valid for nonfluorescent absorbent media in which the ions excited by the incident light drop back spontaneously to the base level without emitting any photons, and the energy absorbed is converted completely into heat. Measuring the temperature rise which results from this provides information on the capacity of the body to absorb light. The theoretical investigation and experimental technique are described in detail along with sources of error.
